“Shepherd dug deep into herself and her process to figure out how to make paintings that would essentially make themselves instead of her superimposing images on them. Having always considered the crisp lines describing geometric structures and spatial experiences to be what her painting was about, she was compelled to finally address the qualities of her painted surfaces without sacrificing th...

“I do believe that there is such a thing as intuition and there is such a thing as imagination. I just think these are concepts, that they’re culturally realized. What we come to understand is, knowledge and meaning are not pure products of our genius but are built into the structure where we reside.” -Charles Gaines, “Systems & Structures,” Art21 Extended Play, December 14, 2022 Charles Gaines...

“My work comes right from a visceral place―deep, deep―as though my roots extend beyond the soles of my feet into sacred soils. Can I take these feelings and attach them to the passerby? To my dying breath, and my last tube of burnt sienna, I will try.” -Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, quoted in Laura Phipps’s catalogue essay, “‘My Roots Extend’: Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and the Landscape of Memory,” ...

Saw a large display in Ottawa years ago that blew everyone away. His work is stunning, beautiful and sometimes disturbing but always intriguing. What vision!
Excellent review! Thank you.
My husband worked at Tyler Graphics back in the day, maybe ‘82. One day I went to pick him up from work (we only had one car) and there was Frank’s Ferrari, just sitting there unlocked. Well, I thought, “what could it hurt? Just for a minute?” No sooner was I sitting down -haha, next to a pile of $ -than here came Frank and Ken Tyler (fortunately) laughing at my chutzpah. Frank told me he loved my car which was a Civic, but turned down my offer of a trade. A kind man, a gentleman, and yes, a towering artist who will be greatly missed by one recent art school grad turned old artist lady.
Frank passed away today May 4 2024 the abstract Master

Just saw it on PBS and had to check it out. Wow amazing modern museum. So very interactive.
thoroughly enjoyable, stimulating breakdown. thank you for the inspiration!
I love his work. I hate to complain, but does the music have to be so loud as the interviewee is talking? It's kind of hard to focus on what he's talking about.
stunning, powerful better aesthetic and imagery than robert rauschenberg or other contemporary art icons sobering content and narrative long ignored in favor of european american centered colonizing and conquest unfortunately, art canon dominated by white males of european origins narrow minded and oblivious Jaune QTS Smith retrospective is much needed glimpse into the atrocities, genocide of America's founding Sad chapter of American history unknown to Americans, self absorbed in Christianity, capitalism and sports Museums and universities have failed to remedy American ignorance Fortunately, the Modern Ft. Worth (Whitney and NGA) offer a glimmer of hope by giving voice to indigenous artists We can only hope more museums and universities correct past wrongs and subconscious biases and seek/share truth
This is a great retrospective at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The way she uses imagery from modern culture to communicate was quite impactful to me. I highly recommend you check it out if you are able.
impressive artist
Thank you for this wonderful talk!
Frank Stella looks like a retired assembly-line worker, but that's not a bad thing at all.
facinating artist and helpful intro to his work from artists and colleagues
not a wiley fan, but am a fan of all underrepresented people of color omitted from canons of western art history, particularly indigenous people. i'm also so glad that the modern ft. worth invested in this work since it is now become part of the art canon
fascinating texas connection to ny school and abstract expressionism. impressive acquisition by the modern fw 10 year after her death and 60 years after she painted these trailblazing works
One year later
💦 'Promosm'
Enjoyable narration Lovely gallery Influential artist
❤
Thank you Julia for your wonderful workshop about creative strategies and you student art creative projects. I wish I were there. Miss you very much!
great context to help us understand a challenging exhibition . . . very helpful research and insights
sorry i missed this exhibition. i look forward to buying the exhibition catalog at the modern shop (on sale) and studying the photos and essays. thank you to the modern fw for bringing this important work to Texas and thanks to the Broad for curating
excellent explanation and programming
The video is much better silent. Because the people were silenced at that time. Stunning!
I love this place! I hope to visit more often.
I am hoping to visit next year
You are missed so much Julia.
powerful. sorry i missed it
very helpful context and history of this work. great job voting by director's council
where can I purchase a catalogue of this show
great history of great artist. will spend more time with his work at the modern sculpture garden after the weather cools off
One of my favorites!
excellent research and context, janelle
very helpful context to appreciate better his work at the modern ft. worth
very unique artist. the modern ft. worth was prescient once again to invest in his work in 60's and 80's and fortunate that anne marion was such an epic collector
iconic sculpture
solid collection. wish we could see more of it.
unique mural owned by the modern ft. worth. deft acquisition. iconic artist who also created a unique curving wall in the backyard of the hoffman home in dallas (iconic exemplar)
stunning vintage work by icon. dr. marla price, director at the modern ft worth, estimated the value of this work at that time starting at $150M since she said this was back when warhol was still painting by hand. so not quite sure how that differs from later silkscreen and lithograph works. regardless, it's date, very early in warhol's fame, makes it unique compared to the room full of warhols on display at the broad museum and other great modern art museums. stunning accomplishment by the modern ft worth so students can study
reading a great exhibition catalog by sf moma and bma curators that includes this among many other master works displayed in sf moma's travelling exhibition. i wish it could have stopped in ft. worth before going to paris
stunning craft. so glad the modern invested in this european master over 20 years ago. moma has a whole room full of bacon's on display now, but fort worth at least has one exceptional example to study and admire (thanks to ann marion r.i.p. and michael auping)
bold, courageous programming
best collection in u.s. outside of ny, la and sf, but with better building than all others and less draining to walk thru
i like linda blackburn's work. great history of the modern
great to hear what makes this very early, precious specimen of lichtenstien's iconic style special. the modern is lucky to have this work. superior specimen and artifact to room full of lichtenstien's at broad museum's impressive collection
my favorite kiefer art in the modern's collection probably. though haven't seen kiefer piece that georg baselitz donated to the modern. but i suspect this piece is more powerful in person than that one. fisher collection at sf moma also had a nice collection of keifers on display. and gagosian had nice exhibit in l.a. over past 6 months.
